Extend the Life of Fresh Flowers
- Cut flower stems on a slant with a sharp knife or pruning shears, under running water.
- Remove any leaves that will end up under water in the vase, to prevent bacteria buildup.
- Plunge flowers immediately into a vase that is pre-filled with water and floral nutrient.
2. Water
- Change the water of your fresh-cut flowers every day or two.
- Use cold water for daffodils, tulips, and other bulb flowers, and hot water for hydrangeas and sunflowers. Most other flowers prefer lukewarm water.
- Re-cut stems again under running water before returning to vase.
3. Nutrients
- Keep flowers lasting longer by adding floral nutrients (available at Sickles Floral Counter.) Add in with fresh water every day or two.
- Fresh flowers should be out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
